Acupressure is a Traditional Chinese Medicine based technique. It uses pressure applied to meridian points on the body, to balance and circulate natural energy. It uses the same principles as acupuncture, to unblock and channel energy through the meridian system. The meridians are natural channels through-out the body, through which “qi”. (energy,) flows.
The points near the skin surface, where these channels converge, are the pressure points, or meridian points. The pressure points, act as “valves”, which when correctly stimulated, restore
The flow of “qi” (energy), health, and balance. In this natural and holistic approach, the whole being of a person, is treated, to restore health and harmony to mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Unlike western medicine, whose approach, is to treat primarily only the body, and to intervene with invasive therapies and chemicals.
Some practioners believe the first hints of acupressure date to ancient Indian texts. The first
formally recognized mention of “qi” is in Chinese writings of the Shang dynasty oracle bones,
produced between the 16th and 11th century, B.C.
Possibly the earliest evidence of the meridian system, was found in the form of Otzi the iceman,
A 5,000 year old mummy, preserved by Alpine glaciers, some of whose tattoos, seem to correspond, to points, a modern acupuncturist would use to treat the diseases, he appeared to suffer from. The true purpose of his tattoos is not known.
Many hospitals in the United States, have come to accept and regularly use acupuncture and acupressure, to relieve symptoms of pain and disease. The positive results have been confirmed by numerous studies. Thousands of people have benefited from this new acceptance in the west, of these holistic techniques.
Now recognized as a valuable therapeutic tool by the World Health Organization,(WHO), Acupressure has gained world-wide acceptance and reknown.
